Similar to health insurance, pet insurance can cover the health care costs for your four-legged family members, including medical treatment and overnight stays at the vet.

Victoria's annual fire awareness week launched today with the message that all Victorians need to understand their fire risk and be ready to act this summer.

Planning and preparing for the fire season should include reviewing and updating your home, contents and health insurance policies to ensure you are covered if and when a fire occurs.

Australians living near grassland in the outskirts of a city or town are encouraged to consider the threat of fire to be a 'not if but when' situation.

Ballarat Health Services is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, which will see hospital beds and a much-needed helipad being added to the hospital.

Minister for Health David Davis announced on Thursday (September 19) that the redevelopment had just entered a new phase, which will see the third and fourth floors of the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre being "fitted-out".

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released two reports on August 1 that shed some light on the health status of Australia's male population.

In a report titled 'The Health of Australia's Males: From Birth to Young Adulthood (0-24 years)', it was stated that a whopping 43 per cent of Australian men between the ages of 14 and 19 had been at risk of injuring themselves at some point during the year because of excessive alcohol consumption.

New data released by the National Health Performance Authority (NHPA) on Thursday (July 25) reveals that over half of Australia's public hospitals have recorded improvements during the March 2013 quarter.

This will be welcomed by anyone with or contemplating taking out a health insurance policy.

The NHPA was established as part of the government's national health reform agenda, its purpose being to make sure all Australians have access to information about how our health system is performing.

The Victorian government is launching two brand-new Academic Health Science Centres to help the state carry on with its world-leading medical research.

David Davis, Victoria's minister for health, today (July 23) opened the Monash Partners Academic Health Science Centre in Melbourne.

He said Melbourne is respected around the globe for its medical research, and is regarded as a front-runner in the areas of science and innovation.

About one-third of Australia's medical and research companies are located in Melbourne.

It was announced over the weekend that Melbourne will host the 2014 Australian Transplant Games.

Designed as a way for transplant recipients of all ages, donor families, living donors and the doctors and nurses who helped them to celebrate "the life-giving gift of organ transplantation", the Transplant Games have been going for 26 years.

Fittingly, 2014 will mark the 14th time they have been held.

National Palliative Care Week is once again upon us - an annual event organised by Palliative Care Australia to raise awareness about end-of-life issues.

Running from May 19 to 25, this year's event is centred on the idea that palliative care is "everyone's business" - that it will affect us all at some time.

A recent survey conducted by Palliative Care Australia revealed that an astonishing one in two respondents had not discussed any end-of-life-care decisions with their loved ones.

A four-kilometre walk is being held in Melbourne on Sunday (April 21) to raise money for the Avner Nahmani Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

This is Australia's only foundation that is solely dedicated to helping those suffering from pancreatic cancer, which is currently the fourteenth leading cause of death in the country.

The aim of the foundation and Sunday's walk is "to break through 40 years of no progress by doubling the number of people who survive Pancreatic Cancer by 2020".
