Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) aims to educate Australians about the threat of oral cancer during its annual Dental Health Week initiative.

According to the DHSV, three Australians are diagnosed with the condition every day, with only 50 per cent of sufferers expected to survive past five years.

No cure currently exists for such cancers, which develop in the mouth, lips and oral cavity.

Despite this, oral cancer awareness levels are comparatively low compared to other forms of cancer.

A new website has been announced as part of a government initiative to keep people more informed about their dietary intake.

Parliamentary secretary for health and ageing Catherine King says: "The website showcases the work of the Food and Health Dialogue … which brings together government, industry and public health groups with the aim of addressing poor dietary habits and making healthier food choices easier and more accessible for all Australians."

A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has found a link between diabetes and poor mental health.

The research shows that people living with diabetes are more likely to suffer from high levels of psychological distress compared those without.

AIHW spokesperson Anne Broadbent says: "In 2007-08, almost 42 per cent of adults with diabetes also reported having medium, high or very high levels of psychological distress, compared with 32% of people without diabetes."

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released the results of its 2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey.

Smoking is on the decline, with the percentage of people over the age of 14 who smoke daily dropping from 16.6 to 15.1 per cent since 2007.

People in their 20s through to their 40s are giving up tobacco in larger numbers on average than their older counterparts.

The government has announced the formation of an advisory council as part of the Australian National Preventative Health Agency.

Acting minister for health and ageing Mark Butler says the council will support the government's recent programs focused on preventative measures for Australians.

"The advisory council will help the agency tackle difficult public health issues, focusing initially on obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and other substance abuse," says Butler.
